DESCRIPTION: Sabre Demolition Corporation was contracted to demolish the State of Pennsylvania’s Health and Welfare Parking Garage. This structure was constructed in the early 1960’s from poured concrete and heavy reinforcing bars. This structure, over 340,000 square feet, covered three levels with multiple ramps. The lower level of the garage was 8 feet below grade on one side and 24 feet below grade on the other. The lower level slab on grade and the exterior retaining walls were to remain intact, so SDC designed a shoring system to hold these walls in place. The shoring mostly comprised of 10 inch H-Beam knee braces, anchored to the walls and slab. The remaining area was secured by installing helical tie-backs on the taller walls. Also prior to demolition SDC had to install a new concrete vault inside of the existing parking garage for the re-routed chilled water lines that the State need for the other buildings in the State Capitol Complex. The demolition was accomplished using 70,000 lbs. hydraulic excavators equipped with concrete pulverizers, hydraulic hammers and grapples. The concrete, over 14,000 cubic yards, and the re-bar, over 900 tons was shipped offsite for recycling. This project involved very little landfill disposal. The site was not backfilled due to a new Federal Court House that was to be constructed on that site.
