PROJECT: Grand Street Mercury Site Hoboken , New Jersey VALUE: $5 Million  CONTACT: Margaret Carrillo-Sheridan BBL Engineering 315-446-9120 

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for decontamination and demolition of a 5-story building, at over 60,000 square foot. The building was dismantled by hand labor down to grade. Prior to dismantlement the entire building was remediated for asbestos and mercury contaminated building components. The project length is over one year.  

PROJECT: NL Industries Tahawus , NY VALUE: $2.3 Million CONTACT: Thomas Griffin ERM 609-895-0050

DESCRIPTION: This project consisted of asbestos abatement, iron ore clean up and complete demolition of fifteen structures and two 200’ stacks at the former iron ore manufacturing facility in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The demolition process involved over one half million square foot of concrete and ten thousand tons of steel materials that were downsized and recycled. Environmental clean up involved sorting and disposing of florescent tubes, PCB ballasts and transformers. This “harsh weather conditions” project was completed on time per the mandated schedule.

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for the decontamination of a two story mercury vapor lamp facility in Monterrey, Mexico. Work included asbestos abatement, cleaning of mercury contaminated equipment, cleaning of pits and sumps, concrete floor cutting, and contaminated pipe removal.

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for the demolition of Gaylord Container Corp. paper mill. The project consisted of asbestos abatement, lead based paint abatement, miscellaneous waste collection, mechanical demolition of concrete and steel structures, and implosion of a 110’ tall boiler building. All concrete was downsized and used as hard fill on site. All steel was recycled.

PROJECT: Infrastructure Demolition Phase C&D Philadelphia , PA VALUE: $3,346,342 CONTACT: Mike Altomari, Urban Engineers 215-922-8080

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted and has successfully completed the removal of approximately $900,000 dollars of asbestos materials from 493,000 sf of building. In addition we removed PCB transformers, lights, ballasts, abated 12,000 sf of exterior brick wall contaminated with lead paint. Removed and relocated approximately $200,000 dollars worth of utilities to include installing of new transformers, wiring and cut and caps through out the navel base. Prior to demolition, we removed perimeter warehouse windows and wood beams and columns. During the bidding we bid the project to crush 70,000 tons of concrete and brick. Both the salvage and crushing operation saved the owner around 8% of the total cost of the bid. After the above SDC demolished the above grade, slab on grade and all below grade footings and foundations from the 493,000 sf of buildings. The site was completely restored to include importing of topsoil and seeding of the site. This project was completed on time and under budget.

PROJECT: Multi-Story Building Demolition/Environmental Abatement Casey Hotel, Scranton, Pennsylvania VALUE: $1.1 Million CONTACT: Eric Webster, Scranton Hotel, LP 607-775-0600

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for environmental abatement and demolition of the Casey Hotel in Scranton, Pennsylvania. This project involved complete facility decontamination, asbestos abatement, and multi-story structural demolition. The buildings consisted of an eleven-story, 200,000 square foot abandon hotel and two attached four-story buildings in the tight quarters of downtown Scranton. Demolition was completed by conventional means with debris segregated for off-site disposal/recycling. The top 5 stories of the hotel were dismantled by crane and the bottom stories with a CAT 345 with a Labounty MS70R shear. One of the four story buildings was demolished by hand, floor-by-floor, because it was attached to another four-story building that remained intact. All work was completed with no lost time accidents and on schedule to facilitate new construction.

PROJECT: Monessen Redevelopment Former Sharon Steel Plant Monessen , Pennsylvania VALUE: $1.5 Million CONTACT: Lynn Showalter 724-830-3651

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for environmental abatement and demolition of the Former Sharon Steel Plant in Monessen, Pennsylvania. Work performed at this abandoned steel mill included abatement and demolition of a blast furnace foundation, central steam room, water treatment plant, and ore yard.

Because the site had been abandoned for years prior to performance of this contract the work area was extremely hazardous (i.e., overgrown vegetation, structural decay, falling debris, limited equipment access, etc.). In response, Sabre designed and implemented a complete site safety program designed to protect contractor, engineer and various trade personnel at the site as well as the general public.

This 110’ tall structure containing five boilers was abated and structurally weakened to allow collapse within it’s own footprint. All steel was recycled at a local facility. The ore yards consisted of over 20,000 cubic yards of concrete, which was demolished by hydraulic hammers and pulverizers and used as on site backfill. This project lasted eleven months

PROJECT: Harrisburg International Airport Middletown , Pennsylvania VALUE: $1,126,795 CONTACT: Paul Koveleski, Turner/Reynolds 717-948-3900 X 4670

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted to demolish over 400,000 square foot of multi-story airport hangers and manufacturing buildings. The project consisted of over 4,000 tons of steel, 30,000 tons of concrete and 3,000 tons of trash. All work was completed on schedule to allow the construction of the New Harrisburg Airport expansion to proceed .

PROJECT: Broad Creek Renaissance Phase II, demolition Roberts Village Norfolk , VA VALUE: $1.1 Million CONTACT: Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority David Heim 757-623-1111

DESCRIPTION: This project involved complete demolition of 27 two story, multiple apartment buildings to make way for permanent housing tracts. Asbestos abatement of each unit, utilities cut and cap work, demolition and site grading were completed. There were strict guidelines including tree protection and street, curbing, and signage salvage that were completed on this highly publicized project.

PROJECT: Mansfield Sr. High School Mansfield , Ohio VALUE: $900,000 CONTACT: Gilbane for Mansfield CSD Jeff Hutchison 419-522-4480

DESCRIPTION: The project involved the complete demolition of a 230,000 square foot former high school. The schedule was extremely aggressive and Sabre personnel worked multiple shifts and weekends to meet the Owner’s critical paths for new construction without delay. This four story structure, constructed of concrete and brick was recycled and reused on site for general fill material.

PROJECT: Greenawalt/Trenor Demolition Springfield , OH VALUE: $1.2 Million CONTACT: City of Springfield Shannon Meadows 937-324-7700

DESCRIPTION: This multiple storied, multiple construction block of buildings in downtown Springfield, Ohio involved critical road and sidewalk closures, due to the close proximities to the general public. A seven story concrete and brick structure was one of the seven early 1900’s buildings that were demolished at the site. UST’s and abandoned steam piping systems were extracted from there below grade locations, several involved asbestos and miscellaneous oils remediation. This high profile project was completed ahead of schedule.

PROJECT: Marshall Habilitation Marshall , Missouri VALUE: $980,374 CONTACT: State of Missouri Sam Hoskins 660-530-5576 

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for decontamination and demolition of an existing hospital and living quarters at a state mental facility. All of the buildings were 3 stories tall and made of brick and concrete. Asbestos abatement of the facility took eight weeks to complete. These buildings were dismantled using hydraulic hammers and grapples. Tunnels connecting all of the buildings were also removed. The site was backfilled, graded, topsoiled, and seeded. All work was completed with no impact to the remaining facility that was still in operation.

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for the complete dismantlement and interior demolition of building 263 at the General Electric Facility in Schenectady, New York. This included dismantlement of large test turbines, spin pits, tanks, and office areas enclosed in tight areas of a live plant. All materials were decommissioned and decontaminated from lead paint and PCB’s. This process included sandblasting, sizing, and shipping. All off site disposal was managed by Sabre. The work was completed within a tight schedule to facilitate new construction.

PROJECT: W.H. Kirk Middle School East Cleveland , OH  VALUE: $848,053 CONTACT: Tom McMahon R.P. Carbone Company 216-268-7952

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for the asbestos abatement and demolition of a 170,000 square foot former school. This was a multi-story building and included the removal of all foundations. All demolition was completed via conventional methods. All materials were recycled or disposed of off site. The site was back filled for the new construction to begin.

PROJECT: Mc Kinley-Brighton School Syracuse , New York VALUE: $752,294 CONTACT: City of Syracuse Ron Kenyon 315-435-4292 

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for decontamination and interior demolition of an existing 170,00 square foot school. Asbestos abatement and demolition had to be and was completed in two and a half months to allow new construction and the school to re-open the following year. The project consisted of a total interior gut by hand labor down to the structural shell of the building with asbestos abatement going on simultaneously. This also included a boiler stack dismantlement that was over 85 feet tall.

PROJECT: MSB Expansion Garage Demolition, University of Cincinnati Cincinnati , Ohio VALUE: $704,361.72 CONTACT: Harley Ellis, John Telintello 513-263-6315

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted by the University of Cincinnati to demolish the MSB parking garage. The project consisted of installing 8’ high wood perimeter fence and pedestrian/traffic control measures prior to demolition and using vibration monitoring throughout the project due to its close proximity to the University Hospital. The crew demolished the five story concrete parking garage using hammers and pulverizers to process all the concrete before shipment to the recycler. All foundation walls and footers were removed the site was back filled and compacted for the new facility to be constructed.

PROJECT: Gonzaga Retreat Center Blooming Grove, New York VALUE: $579,045 CONTACT: New York State Office of General Services Doug Rettig 914-948-0343 ext. 470

DESCRIPTION: This multi-story and multi-construction facility consisted of over seven structures. It was built over a period of fifty years with every type of building material made. These buildings were in very poor condition due to being vacant and vandalized over the past 20 years. All asbestos abatement was completed before conventional demolition. Hydraulic excavators brought the buildings down and loaded the material off site. The entire site was covered with fill, topsoil, and seed. The project was completed on time, which allowed Sabre to collect a large bonus from the State of New York.

PROJECT: Erie County Youth Detention Center Buffalo , New York VALUE: $536,855 CONTACT: Ciminelli-Cowper Doug Flynn 716-855-1200

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for the environmental abatement and demolition of five structures to include office space and a rehabilitation facility. Asbestos abatement and demolition had to be completed with in a short duration. All demolition of these one-story buildings was completed via conventional methods with materials segregated and hauled off site. All work was completed on time to facilitate new construction.  

PROJECT: S & G Packaging Plant Plainfield , IL VALUE: $431,000 CONTACT: BBLES Scot Lewis 412-231-6147

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for complete demolition, clean up, and slab/foundation removal at this former packaging plant that was destroyed by fire. Half of the 320,000 square foot steel frame facility was burned in the fire, leaving all remaining structural members twisted and hanging. Sabre completed all work on time and recycled all the steel and concrete materials. The burned paper products were loaded up and disposed of.

PROJECT: South Bend Parking Garage No. 2 South Bend , Indiana VALUE: $360,017 CONTACT: City of South Bend Thia Vawter 574-235-9251

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for the demolition of a seven story post tension concrete parking garage. The garage was in a downtown area so special care was taken to protect surrounding buildings, roadways, and pedestrian traffic. An 80 ton crane with breaking ball was used to demolish the sixth and seventh floors with the remaining floors being demolished with excavators utilizing pulverizers and hammers. The concrete was hauled off site and the basement was back filled. The project was completed on schedule with no safety incidents.

PROJECT: General Motors Indianapolis , Indiana VALUE: $357,500 CONTACT: General Motors, Engineering Mittal Desai 317-269-5066

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted to remove unused framing and buildings formerly used in the manufacturing of parts at the plant. This project was unique in that these units were on top on the plant roof, nearly in the center, so there was nowhere to set up a crane to assist in the demolition. Sabre dismantled and removed from the roof by hand over 400 tons of steel. This project had no accidents and was complete within three months.  

PROJECT: East Syracuse-Minoa Kinne Street Elementary School East Syracuse , New York VALUE: $356,600 CONTACT: Rob Skeele Turner Construction Company, Inc. 315-682-2310

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for the asbestos abatement and demolition of a three-story elementary school. After abatement crews demobilized Sabre used hydraulic excavators with grapples to demolish the entire structure. A gymnasium located only 25 foot away remained on site. All materials were hauled off site for disposal. All work was completed on time for the construction of the new school.

PROJECT: O.M. Edwards Faciltiy Syracuse , NY VALUE: $301,600 CONTACT: Ted Kinder MCK Building Associates 315-475-7499 

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for the asbestos abatement, lead abatement, demolition, and selective demolition. The work consisted of the abatement of the entire facility, demolition of 30,000 square foot and selective demolition of 60,000 square foot. This facility was constructed in the early 1900’s and abandoned for the last fifteen years causing Sabre to implement a large portion of time to safety concerns. All work was completed without any accidents or damage to the structure that remained.

PROJECT: National Gypsum Matteson , Illinois VALUE: $277,500 CONTACT: Scot Lewis BBL Engineering 412-231-6624 ext. 567 

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was responsible for decontamination and demolition of the former National Gypsum Plant in Matteson, Illinois. This project consisted of three interconnected three-story buildings made from concrete, brick, timber and steel with train trestles and two silos. The trestles and silos were torch cut and dismantled. All foundations were removed and backfilled and the site was top soiled and seeded. .

The site was located within the city limits of Matteson. Dust and traffic control were key components of the site safety program. 

PROJECT: Jamesville DOT Facility Jamesville , NY VALUE: $267,400 CONTACT: James Peterson Hueber Breuer Construction Co. 315-476-7917

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for the asbestos abatement and demolition of the existing DOT maintenance facility. The project was broken down into three phases, allowing Sabre only a short window of opportunity to complete their work with new construction following. The work was completed without interruption to the County’s operations. The structures were completely removed, including all foundations and all material was trucked off site for recycling.  

PROJECT: Gates-Chili-Ogden Sewage Treatment Plant Rochester , New York VALUE: $250,460 CONTACT: Monroe County Reinhard Gsellmeier 716-760-7610 ext. 7023

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for the demolition of the Monroe County Sewer Treatment Facility. The project consisted of demolition of ten concrete settling tanks and a five-story steel incinerator building. Sabre used hammers, shears, and pulverizers to process more than 8,000 tons of concrete and 1,000 tons of steel. That concrete was then processed on site for use as backfill at the facility. All structures were removed to two foot below grade, backfilled, and compacted for the new facility to be constructed.

PROJECT: Columbia Mills Minetto , New York VALUE: $207,000 CONTACT: C&S Engineers Bruce Letts 315-455-2000

DESCRIPTION: Sabre was contracted for the asbestos abatement and demolition of a four story, 50,000 square foot concrete structure. Sabre’s crew removed all known asbestos materials and with the use of hydraulic hammers on a CAT 330 brought the structure down. This structure was only fifty foot away from new construction of a senior housing building. Foundations were removed to two foot below grade, the site was backfilled and graded, and all the rubble was hauled off site for disposal. The project was completed in only five weeks.
