Houston Main Building Implosion
Project Background
Sabre was contracted to demolish the 22-story, 510,000 square-foot Houston Main Building at the MD Anderson Cancer Center Facility in Houston, TX. The half-million square-foot building was a steel framed structure with poured concrete slabs and masonry and limestone exterior walls. Prior to demolition, Sabre removed over 400,000 square feet of asbestos containing mastic and vapor barrier that was on the interior and exterior of the structure.
Sabre partnered with Controlled Demolition (CDI) from Phoenix, MD to implode the structure. The structure was prepared by crews by removing elevator shafts, stair wells and concrete floor sections. All remaining interior construction was removed down to bare concrete walls. The surrounding buildings had to be protected with geotextile fabric. Sabre coordinated with local authorities, surrounding hospitals and business owners for the structure implosion which resulted in seamless execution.
