Operation Shield: Protecting Yourself from the Silent Tick Threat
Expanding Range: Climate change is pushing ticks into new regions and extending their active seasons year-round. Especially in the demolition industry where tall grasses are known to be an environmental risk.
~500,000 Cases/Year: Lyme disease is the most common tickborne illness diagnosed annually in the US alone.
Painless Bites: Most bites go completely unnoticed. Symptoms may not appear until days after exposure.
Where They Hide
Ticks thrive in environments that are easy to overlook during a busy workday. Woods & Tall Grass Dense vegetation, leaf litter, and brush are prime habitats — especially near white-tailed deer. Surfaces You Touch Wood piles, picnic benches, and rocks are common resting spots — not just the ground.
Armor Up
Workplace PPE: Light-Colored Clothing Wear light colors so ticks are easier to spot before they attach to your skin. Tuck & Seal Tuck pants into boots and shirts into pants to eliminate entry points for ticks. Chemical Barrier Use permethrin-treated gear and DEET-based repellents for an added layer of defense.
The Golden Rule of Removal: Never twist, jerk, crush, or use heat or petroleum jelly to remove a tick. Improper removal increases the risk of infection.
1. Grasp Close to Skin Use fine-tipped tweezers positioned as close to the skin surface as possible.
2. Pull Steadily Upward Apply firm, even upward pressure — no twisting or jerking motions.
3. Clean the Area Disinfect immediately with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.
Know the Warning Signs
Bullseye Rash A distinctive expanding circular rash around the bite site is a hallmark symptom of Lyme disease. Flu-Like Symptoms Fever, chills, fatigue, headaches, and unexplained joint or muscle pain are key warning signs. Report Immediately Symptoms can be delayed by days or weeks. Report all bites to your supervisor as a workplace injury without delay.
The Harsh Truth about Lyme Disease: Often Missed Early Lyme disease can go undiagnosed for weeks or even months, especially when the early signs are subtle or mistaken for something else. Early Treatment Matters Prompt medical attention can prevent the infection from progressing. Delays increase the risk of lasting complications.
Serious Long-Term Damage If untreated, Lyme can lead to chronic joint pain, neurological damage, and heart problems that can disrupt work and daily life. Outdoor Workers Are at Risk Anyone who works outdoors — including demolition crews — can be exposed to ticks and should treat every bite or symptom seriously.
