Safety Spotlight: Hearing Protection

Topic:

Noise Exposure / Hearing Conservation

Why It Matters:

Noise is a common hazard on demolition and construction sites. Equipment, tools, machinery, and impact work can create sound levels that may damage hearing over time. Hearing loss is often gradual, permanent, and may not be noticed until it is too late.

Field Reminder:

Wear the required hearing protection when working around loud equipment, power tools, compressors, generators, saws, breakers, or other high-noise activities. Single hearing protection is required at 85 decibels, and double hearing protection is required at 95 decibels. If you have to raise your voice to speak to someone nearby, the area may be loud enough to require hearing protection.

What Supervisors Should Review:

Supervisors should review high-noise work activities planned for the day, identify areas where hearing protection is required, and confirm employees have the proper earplugs or earmuffs available. Crews should also be reminded to wear hearing protection correctly and consistently, not just when the noise becomes uncomfortable.

Takeaway of the Week:

Protect your hearing every day. Once hearing is damaged, it does not come back.
